24 years after the record “Debut”, Björk recently released her ninth studio album “Utopia”. Over the years, she has established herself as one of our biggest musical innovators – a modern icon. As if she never can run out of ideas, Björk has once again created a groundbreaking album and this summer, the Icelandic artist comes to Sweden for a concert at Dalhalla.
After 2015’s sad divorce album “Vulnicura”, the personal process has continued. “Utopia” is a positive and optimistic look upward and forward. During the creative process, Björk assembled a twelve women strong Icelandic flute orchestra, whom she conducted and arranged music for. And in the meeting between the organic flutes, the choir Hamrahlíðarkórinn and Björk’s electronic rhythms and musical impulses an entire universe fits.
“If we’re gonna survive not only my personal drama but also the sort of situation the world is in today, we’ve got to come up with a new plan. If we don’t have the dream, we’re just not gonna change. Especially now, this kind of dream is an emergency”, Björk told Dazed this summer when talking about the upcoming album.
She is absolutely right. We need a positive, bright and optimistic utopia to long and strive for. Something we will experience when one of our time’s greatest artists comes to Dalhalla for a unique concert in the most beautiful of surroundings.
