Pentecost 1991 brought the vision of Dalhalla. Margaret Dell Fors, a former opera singer and radio producer, who had long been looking for a festival site for summer use, and Asa Nyman, then of Culture in Rättvik, “found” the disused limestone quarry. The location was ideal, far away from all buildings, well-shielded against noise pollution from road traffic and industry. The place itself was a treat for eye and ear, like a scene, Valhalla, taken from Wagner’s world, in Dalarna – the name was Dalhalla.
In June, conducted a successful test concert with invited audience, press and TV. In August the same year founded the association Dalhalla Friends.
On July 23 was the first concert room. Dalhalla Friend’s honorary chairman, opera singer Birgit Nilsson fired the starting shot.
The capacity was expanded to 2600 seats. Parking lots adjacent to the crime was completed and a protected walkway down to the audience room was completed. The official opening of Dalhalla took place on 21 June 1995 with a major opera concert. Swedish Television broadcast the concert and Dalhalla became known throughout the country. Even foreign press covered the event.
During the summer were a few events, some of which, by the stadium was rented out to artists who independently conducted concerts.
Association Dalhalla Friends formed a subsidiary, Dalhalla Production AB, which had responsibility for operations. Dalhalla first CEO hired.
The first test the performance of the opera, with short scenes from Wagner’s “Nibelungen Ring”, took place. The show was a huge success, even internationally. The number of programs during the summer were expanded.
Hakan Ivarson hired part-time as CEO and combined mission (under 3 years) to continue to be the County Music Head of Music in Dalarna (MID). The administration was expanded in collaboration with MiD involving joint finance and marketing department.
The first international opera co-operation with the Latvian National Opera in Riga and “Nabucco”, was conducted. Dalhalla celebrated its 5th anniversary with an opera concert where Hakan Hagegård Others took part.
The company Clas Ohlson celebrated 80 years with, among others. a. a joint arrangement in Dalhalla. The first concert with the Rhapsody in Rock was carried out and the high demand for tickets meant that the concert had to be doubled. A large proportion of the visitors had to park the cars at Kull’s mortar and then take the bus to and from the stadium.
Dalhalla Opera Festival was initiated, with five different productions: A Masked Ball, Nabucco, Turandot, Wagner’s Ring in the compact version and opera concert with the Royal Opera. Dalhalla presented for the first time a children’s opera: Pelle. World tenor José Cura visited Dalhalla.
The season included 28 different events. During the fall was Dalhalla scene and artist area and late on New Years Eve 1999 celebrated the new millennium in with a grand event in Dalhalla where, among other things. a. a figure skating team took part in several isnummer on the bright flushed Dalhalla Lake.
Audience section was expanded to 4000 seats and the new stage area was completed, with an orchestra pit and greater artistic space. At a gala concert on June 7, the new investment in the presence of the King and Queen.
A long-awaited collaboration with the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland began in the form of performance Forces of Nature.
Hakan Ivarson left the post of county music director and became managing director of full-time in Dalhalla. Synergy with MiD in administration ceased and instead focused Dalhalla on its own administration.
Cooperation with the Savonlinna continued, with performances of Macbeth, and the Estonian National Opera guest performance for the first time, with La Traviata. Demand for the Rhapsody in Rock had increased from year to year and the summer was given eight concerts to sell out stadiums!
José Cura returned and gave a successful concert, despite colds and voice problems.Manhattan Transfer visited Dalhalla and gave two well-attended concerts.
Malmö Opera guested with “Aida” and broke box office records for opera in Dalhalla with two sold-out performances, over 8,000 visitors. Association Dalhalla Friends celebrated its 10th anniversary with a gala concert in which Margaret Dell Fors was thanked for his work as founder of Dalhalla.
Dalhalla Opera Festival was expanded to six performances in three different productions:
New York Harlem Theatre presented “Porgy and Bess”, and Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci, La Bohème and Eugene Onegin were made.
Stefan Skold, former Head of the Malmo Opera was engaged as the new artistic director of Opera Dalhalla operations with a mandate to plan the opera in Dalhalla from 2005 onwards.
Dalhalla made its own production by Jan Guillou’s Arn trilogy as a basis, “Arn – a musical adventure” and one of the most successful bands from Ireland, the Chieftains, came to visit with a much appreciated concert.
Historic Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow, one of the world’s five largest opera house, visited Sweden and Dalhalla for the first time with “Turandot” and an opera concert. 280 participants!
Investments continued, with new toilets, improvements to roads, parking areas and lighting.
Rhapsody in Rock became the “house band” in the arena by giving up to go on tour in Sweden and instead drive 15 specially adapted concerts – all sold out!
More international acts than ever: Dalhalla was attended example of the Norwegian National Opera (Peer Gynt) and Georgian National Ballet (Trovatore), Sigur Rós, Diana Krall, Dwight Yoakam and The Hollies.
A tattoo was completed. P Floyd appeared in Dalhalla for the first time.
Dalhalla set attendance records with the 108,000 concert-goers!
Margareta Dellefors was named in honor of the Photographic Society Dalhalla Friends and was honored with a bust in Dalhalla for her performance.
Association Dalhalla Friends formed a new company, Dalhalla AB (DFAB) in order to broaden the ownership of the stadium. Municipalities Siljan, Dalarna County Council and four private interests became a new shareholder in the company arena DFAB which in turn leases the stadium to Dalhalla AB (formerly Dalhalla Production AB).
Estonian National Opera guest appearances with Carmen and Rigoletto. For the first time presented a magic show – with Joe Labero. and Sheeba gave three nearly sold-out concerts in a collaboration between Dalhalla AB and Music at Siljan.
On 17 May there were 25 cm of snow in Dalhalla! Fabric roof over the stage, which had just been erected before the start of the season and that does not tolerate snow load, was about to be cracked and could also devastate the stage area. A rapid response by snow rescued the situation … Board of DFAB immediately started work to find a new roof structure that would withstand snow and thus be in place year round.
Dalhalla Opera presented Mme Butterfly, Otello and Carmina Burana.
Rhapsody in Rock, has given concerts in Dalhalla during almost all seasons, resulted in its 50th sold-out concert, which means that over 200 000 visitors experienced Robert Wells in Dalhalla! For this outstanding performance was Wells of Dalhalla a small plate of copper with an inscribed text.
2009 – a milestone
With an increase in government grants and other project grants could Dalhalla finally put up his own opera production, the first since 1999. Mozart’s Magic Flute was constructed in order to fully use the stadium facilities, including several venues outside the stage area and with great effect. The initiative became a bigger success than expected, with over 15 000 visitors during the four performances. A fantastic attendance record for an opera in vide!
A new permanent scentak replaced before the season the old canvas, creating entirely new (technical) possibilities for the various events. Dalhalla can now also schedule events at times other than summer months, and before long, December 12 this year, becoming the premiere of Christmas with Christmas.
The new roof was a hit! The roof has also resulted in quite different technological possibilities, such as advanced lighting and a water spray. At the last concert was presented a new gigantic waterfall (from ground level up to the lake), which enhances the experience of Dalhalla as a unique and powerful arena.
World Artists doing exclusive concerts in Dalhalla. The legend Dionne Warwick gives “a magic moment” in the true spirit of Bacharach. Paul Potts, who leaves the scene touched and charmed to tears. British pianist and singer Jamie Cullum creates evocative chorus of the whole Dalhalla audience. Bryan Ferry impress with a great show of the highest quality.
International world-class artists and bands such as James Morrison, John Fogerty, Simple Minds, Norah Jones and Tom Jones makes amazing gigs exclusively for Dalhalla this summer. This means that the venue Dalhalla has received greater international recognition. For the fourth year in a row popular Malena gave two fully booked concerts.
Opening records, the first week of July with Toto, Sting and Ulf Lundell. More than 10,000 people visited Dalhalla. Patti Smith, Melody Gardot and Earth, Wind & Fire Experience touched the hearts of audiences with their personal, emotional and nostalgia-filled concerts. For the fifth year in a row Malena Ernman gave two concerts, both fully booked.
