The performance will take place in Swedish.
Folkoperan brings back the opera to Dalhalla’s roots with Puccini’s Tosca – a passionate drama where art and politics take center stage.
Tosca is one of the most gripping opera dramas to date, featuring some of the most beautiful music ever written. At its center are the opera singer Floria Tosca, her beloved – the artist and freedom fighter, Mario Cavaradossi – and the cruel, power-hungry Chief of Police, Scarpia. In the hands of director Eirik Stubø, this love triangle becomes an intimate, stripped-down yet grand chamber drama.
The production, which has played to sold-out houses at Folkoperan in Stockholm and will have its revival premiere at Norrlandsoperan in March, is now being adapted to Dalhalla’s magical outdoor stage for a guest performance in the limestone quarry on August 4, 2026.
Tosca is set in Rome during a time of political chaos, corruption, and terror. Over the course of one intense day, we follow Floria Tosca as brutality reaches its peak. The celebrated singer is pushed to her limits – she kills her oppressor, loses her beloved, and ultimately takes her own life.
Puccini’s Tosca premiered in Rome in 1900 and is regarded as one of the masterpieces of opera ever written. Folkoperan’s musical director, Henrik Schaefer, elevates both the triangular drama and the music to new heights with an ingenious arrangement for wind orchestra. The production allows space for discovering new musical nuances while intensifying the storytelling and dramatic impact.
Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, the creator of Tosca, is considered one of the greatest composers in history, with operas such as La Bohème, Turandot, and Madama Butterfly to his name.
Tosca is a co-production between Folkoperan and Norrlandsoperan.
